AN OVER VIEW

ORIGIN OF THE DIRECTORATE GENERAL

This Directorate General was constituted in 1939, as part of the Board’s office for conducting periodical inspections and for advising the Board on technical questions and on standardization of organization and procedure in the Custom Houses and the Central Excise Commissionerates.It was seperated from the Board on 1st April, 1946 and given the status of an attached office.

Each Regional Unit except Central Regional Unit is headed by one Additional Director General who is the head of the department Central Regional Unit, Hyderabad is being headed by an officer incharge of Additional Director, who reports to Additional Director General, southern Regional Unit, Chennai.

The Director General of Inspection is the Cadre Controlling Authority of Group B, C and D for 8 Directorate General including the Directorate General of Inspection, DG (Vigilance), DG (HRD), DG (Export Promotion), Office of the CDR, Directorate of Legal Affairs, DG (Audit) and DG (Safeguards).

Central Regional Unit (CRU) of the Directorate General of Inspection, Customs & Central Excise, is located at Hyderabad. Earlier, Western Regional Unit (WRU) and Southern Regional Unit (SRU) were both loacted in Hyderabad before being moved to Mumbai and Chennai, respectively, when the CRU was created ( F.No. A11013/E/25/71-Ad-IV dated 09.07.73 from the Government of India, Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue & Insurence conveyed the sanction for creation of the CRU). The CRU started functioning on 11.10.73 and was headed by Inspecting Officer-class I. Thereafter, as per letter F.No. 1000/4/90-dt. 09-11-1993, the CRU was placed under the charge of an Assistant Director, within the administrative and operational control of Additional Director General, SRU, Chennai. Further, as per the DGICCE, New Delhi's F.No. 1040/5/99 (pt) dated 06.02.2003, the CRU was upgraded and placed under the charge of a Joint/ Additional Director of Inspection since 2004.

IT'S CHARTER OF DUTIES

To Study the working of the Customs, Central Excise Departmental Machinery throughout the country.

To suggest measures for improvement of its efficiency and rectification of important defects in it through inspection and by laying down procedures for smooth functioning.

To Carry out Inspection to determine whether the working of the field formation are as per Customs and Central Excise procedures and to make recommendations in respect to the procedural flaws, if any noticed.

To suggest measures for improvement in functioning of the field formations.

Nodal office for implementation of Official Language Policy of Government formations.
